Report on World Breastfeeding Week Programme

Title: World Breastfeeding Week Awareness Programme

Participants: GNM 2nd Year students, GNM 3rd Year students, and faculty members

Introduction

On the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week, the GNM 2nd Year and GNM 3rd Year students, along with faculty members from Aditya College of Nursing and Aditya School of Nursing, organized a health awareness programme at Vanivilas Maternity Hospital, Bengaluru. The programme aimed to educate postnatal mothers and their family members about the importance of breastfeeding and to promote exclusive breastfeeding for the healthy growth and development of infants.

Objectives

* To create awareness about the importance of breastfeeding.
* To educate postnatal mothers on exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months.
* To promote early initiation of breastfeeding and the importance of colostrum.
* To encourage correct breastfeeding techniques and maternal nutrition.
* To distribute educational pamphlets to reinforce health education.

Activities Conducted

1. Skit Performance

The GNM 2nd Year and GNM 3rd Year students presented an educational skit highlighting:

* Importance of colostrum feeding
* Early initiation of breastfeeding
* Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months
* Correct breastfeeding techniques
* Common myths and misconceptions regarding breastfeeding
* Family support for successful breastfeeding

The skit effectively conveyed important health messages in an interesting and easy-to-understand manner.

2. Health Education

A health education session was conducted for postnatal mothers. The following topics were discussed:

* Benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby
* Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months
* Proper positioning and attachment during breastfeeding
* Maternal nutrition during lactation
* Burping techniques
* Complementary feeding after six months
* Prevention and management of common breastfeeding problems

The mothers actively participated and clarified their doubts during the session.

3. Pamphlet Distribution

Informative pamphlets on breastfeeding were distributed to postnatal mothers and their attendants. The pamphlets covered:

* Benefits of breastfeeding
* Correct breastfeeding practices
* Exclusive breastfeeding recommendations
* Maternal nutrition during lactation
* Essential breastfeeding tips

Outcome

The programme received an enthusiastic response from postnatal mothers, their family members, and hospital staff. The skit, health education, and pamphlet distribution helped improve awareness about breastfeeding and encouraged mothers to adopt healthy breastfeeding practices.

Conclusion

The World Breastfeeding Week Awareness Programme conducted at Vanivilas Maternity Hospital, Bengaluru, was successfully organized by the GNM 2nd Year and GNM 3rd Year students, under the guidance of their faculty members. The programme effectively promoted the importance of breastfeeding through skits, health education, and pamphlet distribution. It enhanced the students’ communication, teaching, and teamwork skills while contributing to the promotion of maternal and child health.
